Kibbutz Ein Harod is situated in the Jezreel Valley in the north of Israel, a place rich in biblical sites. The name Ein Harod is identified with the Spring of Harod mentioned in the Book of Judges, in the Bible.
Mount Gilboa commands the view to the south. It was on this mountain that King Saul and his sons were killed in a battle with the Philistines. On the eve of the battle Saul visited the soothsayer at Ein Dor and must have passed close to where the kibbutz stands today.
Mark Twain came to Israel in 1869; his impressions of the Jezreel Valley are recorded in his book “Innocents Abroad” – “Of all the lands for dismal scenery, I think Palestine must be the prince. The hills are barren, the valleys unsightly deserts….it is a hopeless, dreary, heartbroken land…”. Ones that will visit Jezreel valley today will find the complete opposite of this.
The community founded in 1952 has 530 members with an average of about 13 international volunteers. Ein Harod Ichud's main lines of business are agriculture, industry, tourism, and various small businesses. Volunteers can work in the fields, in the laundry, the factory or the dining room.
Ein Harod Ihud was Israel's first "green" kibbutz. The kibbutz has introduced a whole series of environmental projects. Recycling bins have been installed for sorting waste and an ecological garden is being planted based on a model developed by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Technological biggest institute in Israel.
The kibbutz is switching to environmentally friendly detergents and has distributed a list of products not tested on animals. An energy survey has been conducted to identify alternative energy sources in the kitchen, laundry and ironing room. Energy consumption is being cut by using energy-saving bulbs and air conditioners, and installing electricity meters in homes and public buildings. The Ministry of Agriculture has approved funding for research on energy efficiency in milk cooling.
Work places on the Kibbutz: Gardening, swimming pool, laundry, dining room, field crops (agriculture), kindergartens, nursing home.
The living accommodation of the volunteers in the kibbutz: 2 volunteers in the apartment, two rooms in the apartment. Each apartment has a toilet and shower, WIFI, cable TV, fully equipped kitchen, furniture, balcony
