Kibbutz Zikim was established in 1949, by a group of young Romanian Jews who belonged to Hashomer Hatzair
before their arrival in Mandatory Palestine
in 1947. At that time, Jewish settlement in the Negev was very sparse, and each new location was considered to be a - point of light (zik) in the wilderness. Michael Har-Segor, later an Israeli historian, came up with the name while imprisoned in Romania for his activity in Hashomer Hatzair. He says he translated a quote from Pushkin
into Hebrew: From sparks shall come a flame.
The proximity to the Gaza border and being located at the southwest point in the country has its challenges, but the kibbutz is also located in one of the most beautiful places in Israel. 1.5 km from one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean Sea, between the beginning of the desert, the Shikma Reserve which has a unique variety of birds, mammals and insects, and the Shikma Reservoir which holds the water from the rains and forms a natural lagoon a few hundred of meters from the kibbutz.
Kibbutz Zikim is located an hour drive from Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, half an hour from Ashdod, 15 min. from Ashkelon and 5 min. from the beach!!!
Kibbutz Zikim is a Kibbutz Shitufi - a kibbutz still preserving a cooperative system.
The kibbutz offers a wide range of commodities, dining room, laundry, members club, nursery, dental clinic, tennis court, synthetic soccer field and a swimming pool (opens from June to September).
Kibbutz Zikim counts 350 community members, 250 residents and around 3-4 selective international volunteers.
There are two factories, avocado fields, gardening, and a small zoo, but Volunteers mainly work at the Milking Dairy (Refet) , a 550 milking cow dairy producing 18,000 liters of milk a day. Zikim's Refet is one of the best milking dairies in Israel (and in the world!!!) and most of the workers speak Spanish, English and Thai, so if you are interested in learning and experience what is to work in one of the best dairies in the world this is the place!!!
Volunteer's room is located at the center of the kibbutz and consists in, a two bedroom, a kitchen and eating area, and a shower/toilet.
Zikim awaits volunteers who are responsible workers and willing to experience working in one of the biggest and more advanced dairies in Israel as well as experiencing the living in a Kibbutz Shitufi
